Write Fewer Time Checks To Be A Stronger Entrepreneur
Why you need to be writing more money checks instead
For a really long time, I was writing more time checks than money checks.
Instead of writing checks to coaches, programs, and team members to help me grow, I was writing checks for my time.
I decided to spend all of my free time doing everything myself, from bookkeeping to social media, to coaching myself through my business’ next steps — I truly wore multiple hats.
This is typical for so many startup founders — we get into bootstrapping mode and throw a lot of tasks on our plate because our financial bank account is feeling thin. It doesn’t feel reasonable to hire out or to buy some kind of support.
The fallacy of this is that you can always make more money, but not more time. It’s unreasonable to spend a currency that doesn’t replenish.
Spending your time frivolously has a cost in the form of delayed success or no success at all.
By DIY-ing everything myself, I stagnantly moved from one year to the next without much to show for it. I was eating my time doing menial tasks and not focusing my time on the tasks that would propel my business forward.
One day you wake up after doing this too many times and realize you’ve wasted a whole year running circles in the same spot.
Write More Money Checks
I encourage you to bring your attention to how you’re spending your time like currency.
Do you fill up your day with tasks and conversations that subtract time from your zone of genius?
Do you spend your time freely on tasks that are easy for you to do, but aren’t necessarily moving those sales and impact numbers?
Do you ever budget your time and save it up for actions that you know will double or triple your return on time investment?
We’ve been brought up into the world with the belief that money is rare when it’s actually an abundant, renewable resource that you can find everywhere.
Time is one of the scarcest resources we possess and there’s no way to get more than what we’ve been allotted.
To become a stronger entrepreneur this month, write more money checks and fewer time checks.
Hire support, get a coach, buy that course, free up your time so that you can spend less time mindlessly doing and more time reflecting, cultivating, and improving your skills and mind.
By making smarter purchases and hiring support to free up your time, you’ll find yourself working with collaborators who elevate your thinking, your brain space opening up to new ideas, and you’ll find more time to live in your zone of genius.
